Description

Do astronauts eat ice cream? Of course they do! But it’s bone dry.

The food the astronauts eat in the space station is freeze-dried, to make it durable and extremely light to lift into space. We think it is time that we on earth also get the opportunity to test astronaut food.

First up on the menu of VitenWahl's astronaut food is a classic Sandwich ice cream! Astronaut ice cream in collaboration with Isbjørn Is.

You might be thinking; do astronauts need ice cream? Freeze-dried soups and dinner, yes, but ice cream? The answer is that everyone needs ice cream.

This astronaut ice cream is made in a special process that removes around 98% of the moisture from the food, but only that. The nutrients and taste remain. The sandwich also keeps its shape and appearance. But the weight is reduced to a fraction.

And weight is crucial when pushing a super-expensive rocket up and out of the atmosphere. That is why astronauts have eaten freeze-dried food since the first space flights. Plus, astronaut food has an almost infinite shelf life (although our astronaut ice cream has to have a best-before date).

Our astronaut ice cream comes from beautiful Follese outside Bergen, and is produced by Isbjørn Is . The cream comes from happy cows with screeching r's and rain hats between the horns. The freeze-drying magic is provided by the food processing company Krispy AS in Tønsberg. Although their main job is to save surplus fruit to make delicious snacks, they didn't hesitate when we needed help to fulfill the dream of astronaut food produced in Norway.

T-minus 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - Bon appetit! Astronaut ice cream on the menu!
